Cloud vs on-premise ERP: which is right for you?
Once you've decided you need ERP, the next question: run it in the cloud or on your own servers? Both are valid — it depends on your situation.
Cloud ERP (SaaS)
- Low upfront cost — pay a subscription, no server purchase.
- Quick to start and maintained by the vendor (updates, backups, security).
- Accessible anywhere — good for distributed teams or multiple branches.
- Downside: ongoing subscription cost; data sits on the vendor's servers.
On-premise ERP
- Full control — data and system live on your premises.
- Good for strict data-compliance needs or limited internet connectivity.
- Downside: upfront server investment, and an IT team for maintenance.
How to decide
Ask:
- Budget — more comfortable with a large upfront cost (on-premise) or an ongoing subscription (cloud)?
- Data control — are there rules requiring data on your premises?
- IT team — are there resources to maintain your own servers?
Many SMEs choose cloud for its leanness; companies with specific control needs choose on-premise. There's no universal answer — much like the off-the-shelf vs custom decision: based on needs, not trends.
