CRM vs ERP: what's the difference, and do you need both?

CRM and ERP are often mentioned together and sometimes assumed to be the same. In fact they handle different sides of the business — and are strongest working together.
What CRM is
CRM (Customer Relationship Management) handles the front of the business: managing leads, tracking the sales pipeline, and nurturing customer relationships. Its goal: winning and keeping customers.
What ERP is
ERP handles the back: stock, finance, purchasing, and production. Its goal: fulfilling orders efficiently and keeping operations tidy.
Do you need both?
It depends on your business:
- A large sales team with many leads → CRM helps a lot.
- Complex operations (stock, production, finance) → ERP is the priority.
- Both → many growing companies need both.
The real power: connected
The biggest value appears when CRM and ERP are connected — an order won in CRM flows straight into fulfilment and billing in ERP, without re-entry. That's exactly the role of system integration.
