How long does an ERP implementation take?

After cost, the second most common question: how long? The honest answer depends on a few things — but there's a picture you can hold onto.
The general picture
As a rough guide:
- SMEs with basic needs (finance, inventory, sales): more compact.
- Mid-sized firms with production: usually 3 to 6 months.
- Large projects with many modules and integrations: longer, usually run in phases.
A specific figure for your situation only comes after discovery.
The stages that take time
- Discovery & blueprint — mapping the process and agreeing scope. Rushing here actually slows everything down.
- Configuration / development — setting the system up to fit your process.
- Data migration — often underestimated; messy data can consume time on its own.
- Training & testing — making sure the team can genuinely use the system.
- Go-live & stabilization — the first weeks usually need intensive support.
Why projects slip
Three most common causes:
- Messy legacy data — cleaning takes longer than expected.
- Scope changes mid-way — features get added without adjusting the timeline.
- The internal team isn't involved — even a great system fails if the people using it aren't part of it.
We cover this in why ERP projects fail.
