ERP vs custom software: which is right for your business?

This is one of the most decisive — and most often mis-made — decisions. Building custom when off-the-shelf would do is wasted money; forcing off-the-shelf onto a unique process is a source of constant friction.

When off-the-shelf ERP fits better

Off-the-shelf ERP (e.g., Odoo, or similar products) suits you when:

• Your processes are fairly standard — similar to many other companies.
• You need many connected modules: finance, stock, sales, purchasing, production.
• You want to get running quickly with proven practices.

Upside: cheaper and faster, mature features, large community. Downside: your process may need to adapt a little.

When custom software fits better

Custom software suits you when:

• Your process is unique and a competitive advantage.
• No ready-made product genuinely fits.
• You need full control over the flow and interface.

Upside: a 100% fit with your needs. Downside: more expensive, slower, and needs ongoing maintenance.

Often the answer is "both"

Many companies benefit most from a combination: off-the-shelf ERP for common processes (finance, stock), then custom or integration for the truly distinctive parts. You don't have to pick one extreme.

How to decide
